Dental Emergencies

We Are Your Emergency Pediatric Dentist in Ballwin

Unfortunately for our little ones accidents occur and it is important to know what to do in a dental emergency. We have listed out some of the possible symptoms that your child may be experiencing in order for you to determine if the child is in an emergent situation or not. As a emergency pediatric dentist in Ballwin, we will assist with any dental emergencies that arise.

Clean the area around the sore tooth thoroughly. Rinse the mouth with warm salt water and use dental floss to dislodge any food or debris. Do NOT place aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissues. If face is swollen, apply a cold compress and see Dr. Ahmed as soon as possible.

Cut or bitten lip or cheek

Apply ice to bruised areas. If swelling is present, apply a cold compress. If there is bleeding, apply direct pressure to the bleeding area with a clean gauze or cloth. If bleeding does not stop within 15 minutes, take the child to a hospital emergency room.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Gently clean dirt from the injured area with warm water. Protect the tooth from further exposure to air or cold liquid (cover with sterile gauze). Locate and save any broken pieces in milk and bring to us. Place cold compress over face, in the area of the injured tooth, to decrease swelling. See Dr. Ahmed IMMEDIATELY.

Possibly Broken Jaw

Stabilize the jaw in place by tying a handkerchief, necktie or towel around the jaw and over the top of the head. If swelling is present, apply cold compresses. Go IMMEDIATELY to a hospital emergency room.

Knocked Out Tooth

First, make sure it is a permanent tooth (baby teeth should not be replanted). Find the tooth. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly (10 seconds) under cold water. Handle the tooth by the top (crown) not the root portion. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. Try to reinsert it in its socket and have your child bite on a soft cloth to hold it in position until you arrive at our office. If this is not possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk. See Dr. Ahmed IMMEDIATELY (within 30 minutes if possible). Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.

Other Conditions

Bleeding after baby tooth falls out: Fold and pack a clean gauze or cloth over the bleeding area and have the child bite it with pressure for 15 minutes. Repeat once if necessary. If bleeding persists, see Dr. Ahmed

Cold/Canker sores: Many children occasionally suffer from “cold” or “canker” sores. Usually over-the-counter preparations give relief. Because some serious diseases may begin as sores, it is important to see Dr. Ahmed if these sores persist.

If your child is experiencing any server symptoms, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you.
